Dear Mr. Yue:

I think it is a good idea for you to apply to study computer science specializing
in artificial intelligence at Stanford University. However, the application must
be to the computer science department rather than to me. Therefore, I am sending
your papers to the department and they will send you instructions on how to apply.
Unfortunately, the deadline for applying for admission in September is January 15, but
perhaps they will be able to accept a late application.

Because there are more than 10 times as many applications to the computer science
department PhD program as can be accepted, you should also apply to other
universities. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Cambridge, Massachusetts
02139), Carnegie-Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA 15213), and the University
of Texas (Austin, Texas 78712) also have good graduate programs in artificial
intelligence.

Another possibility is to apply to our Master of Science program which is easier
to enter and which accepts applications up to June. It is a one or two year
program and, unlike the PhD program, does not ordinarily include financial
support.

Should you be admitted to either of these programs, I would be glad to advise
you in your studies.
